What's a Lakeland Guinea Pig?

The Lakeland is an emerging variation/breed of Cavy (Guinea Pig) that is a fully furred skinny gene carrier that exhibits a short straight wirey-feeling coat. Lakelands are born with a curly/wavey coat, that gradually grows into a straight but coarse feeling short coat as they mature, a texture somewhere between a Smooth-coat and a Rex or Teddy guinea pig (the difference being the rex or teddy breeds don't carry the "skinny" hairless gene).

Some people simply refer to Lakelands as "carriers" as they are carriers of the Skinny gene. However other cavy fanciers prefer to call them by the term Lakeland to distinguish them as their own type/breed of Guinea Pig.

Lakelands can be the result of a Skinny Pig bred to a Lakeland/carrier or any other furred Cavy, or as the result of breeding two Lakelands/carriers together (not the recommended method of breeding Lakelands however, as some of the furred babies may not carry the neccesary Skinny gene, and it is not visible way to tell which ones are which.)
It is possible to produce other coat type Skinny pig gene carriers, such as carriers that have rosettes or long hair, though these are generally not referred to as Lakelands because they do not possess the short coarse coat that defines the Lakeland breed... these carriers are refered to simply as "Carriers".

Lakelands are not an official recognized registerable pure breed within the ACBA or ARBA as they can be the result of two different breeds bred together (eg. Skinny Pig to a Smooth-coat), however Lakelands can still be shown in many shows that judge cavies based on phenotype not genotype. Phenotype means their physical (visible) characteristics and the genotype is the hidden genes, such as the hidden hairless genes which transfer to produce Skinny Pigs.

Lakelands & carriers are an absolute necessity in order to breed Skinny pigs correctly. Every other generation of Skinny Pig breeding must be to a Lakeland or carrier to make sure the immunity gene is not weakened.

Another question we hear alot is: What is a werewolf Skinny Pig? or Is a werewolf Skinny Pig the same as a Lakeland?

A werewolf Skinny pig is a regular Skinny pig that has short wirey fur extending from it's face/head and onto it's body, covering the neck, shoulders and back. This would be considered a PET QUALITY Skinny pig, as a good quality/show quality Skinny Pig only has fur on the feet & face, as set out by the official breed standards.

A werewolf Skinny Pig is not the same as a Lakeland as a Lakeland only carries the skinny gene but has a fully furred coat, where as a werewolf Skinny pig exhibits the hairless gene but with more hair than standard.
